Workshops in Bangkok with David Alan Harvey & Jacob Aue Sobol
Develop your storytelling skills with Magnum photographers
“My workshops are all about my students’ personal growth. I really “squeeze the lemon.” I get out of them their very best work. This is my commitment always. Anyone who takes my workshop is my student for life. I stick with those who want to move ahead with their work for book publishing, for gallery shows, for assignment work, grants, etc. I just help push it forward. It’s all a whirlwind of discovery and adventure, it is magic for sure.” – David Alan Harvey
“With discussions on previous works and a current assignment, this workshop will be a place for new encounters as well as a journey to one’s own self. It is a study of the undefined emotional states that control us, but that also inspires and pushes us forward. The aim of the workshop is to take pictures that create a visual connection to each of the characters. With their intimate, human and present nature, the images should invite the viewer to take a look at his/her own existence, as well as his/her surroundings. The workshop will also explain how to intuitively edit one’s work.” – Jacob Aue Sobol
The event will take place at the Dream Hotel located in the center of Bangkok.
The workshop is aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, who are interested in narrative and storytelling and looking to take the next step in their development. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with as their primary mentor and all efforts will be made to accommodate their choice. Some group sessions with both photographers will also be offered throughout the 7 days.
During the 7 days, each Magnum photographer will lead their group through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst and from their peers. Participants will work with their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating joint workshop projection. This will be a public event and will take place on the rooftop of the Dream Hotel.
Upon acceptance, students will be emailed a welcome package with further information on traveling to Bangkok and the workshop schedule which might defer depending on the group.
