The Magnum Photos x PHOTO 2020 Student Intensive is a five-day educational program developed by Magnum Photos and PHOTO 2020, International Festival of Photography to encourage professional advancement among students and early-career photographers. PHOTO is a major new international festival of photography that will activate Melbourne and sites across Regional Victoria with the most inspiring photography from Australia and around the world.

Given the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, coupled with the advice of government departments and health authorities, the decision was made to postpone the inaugural PHOTO 2020 International Festival of Photography until 10 – 27 September 2020. As such the programme outlined below, which was originally intended for April, may be subject to change.

This first iteration of this program will include a professional practice Seminar, Portfolio Reviews and an exclusive three-day workshop run by Magnum’s international photographers and network of industry experts.

Magnum Photos and PHOTO 2020 are providing Australian photographers an opportunity to undertake this Student Intensive. Additional places will be available to the Seminar and Portfolio Reviews. See below for details.

Subject to change, The Student Intensive will be comprise of three events:

The Seminar

The professional practice seminar is a one-day event for students and early-career photographers. The Seminar will help to demystify many aspects of the international photographic industry and offer practical advice on how to be a successful and socially engaged photographer today.

Portfolio Reviews

The Portfolio Reviews provide a significant opportunity for artists and photographers to present their work to leading professionals in the field of photography for feedback and guidance. Find more information on this event here.

The Workshop

This workshop will be led by industry professionals Shannon Ghannam, Global Education Director at Magnum Photos; Jacqueline Bates, Photography Director at The California Sunday Magazine; and Patrick Waterhouse, Artist and former Editor-in-Chief of Colors Magazine.

Over three days participants will work intensely amongst the tutors and peers to produce a zine of students’ work to also be showcased on the Magnum Photos website. This publication will capture conversations from the event, the challenges of working as a photographer today and advice on how to navigate these issues for use by the wider photographic community. Participants should come fully equipped with a camera and laptop with editing software.
