Magnum Live Lab, Moscow
The first experimental laboratory by Magnum Photos to be held in Russia begins this January
The purpose of the Live Lab project, which has already taken place in Paris, London, and Shenzhen, is to open up the creative process of making, editing and presenting a photographic project for an audience. It is also a collaborative process between the photographers – Thomas Dworzak (Germany), Alex Majoli (Italy), and Newsha Tavakolian (Iran) – and their curator Nina Gomiashvili, who are taking part in a new Moscow edition.
Taking the main framework of seeing the city as a theater, Thomas Dworzak chose 1963 film Walking the Streets of Moscow as a starting point for his project; Alex Majoli chose the words of Italian dramatist and writer Luigi Pirandello “It is so if you think so” as an epigraph to his; Newsha Tavakolian focused on the youth of contemporary Moscow, producing a series of portraits of young people from different professions, set at their homes.
The photographers will be at the location in Zaryadye Park every afternoon for the duration of the Live Lab from January 28 to February 9, which is open to the public.
The results of Magnum Live Lab/19 will then be on display in a final exhibition curated by Nina Gomiashvili from February 11 to March 4 at the pavilion Dome of Zaryadye Park, every day, 10:00–20:00.
The project is organized by The Project Office for the Development of Tourism and Hospitality in Moscow with the support of Moscow City Tourism Committee, Magnum Photos and Zaryadye Park.
