In 2017, Magnum Photos will celebrate 70 years of contribution to photography and world history with the launch of a special anniversary program celebrating our historic legacy, our community, and our contemporary photographic practices: public events, exhibitions, new photographic projects and a series of exclusive digital launches.

To accompany this historical moment, the Magnum Caravan Brazil team is very excited to present a new programme of events to take place all over the country during the year, starting in April 2017 with an exclusive series of events to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro.

Magnum Caravan Workshop: Rio de Janeiro

For the first time in Rio, the renowned spanish Magnum photographer Cristina Garcia Rodero, and the two talented Magnum’s new generation, Bieke Depoorter and Michael Christopher Brown will offer a new unique and intensive photography experience in the “Cidade Maravilhosa”.

From April 22 to 30, Cristina, Bieke and Michael will lead their groups through daily programs of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and ultimately providing the opportunity to learn and improve one’s photographic skills amongst peers.

Intended for photographers or photography students with a good understanding of photographic practice, candidates will spend the five days alongside their selected photographer developing visual language, photographic identity, practical, technical and conceptual skills and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace. Students will also have the opportunity to build a photographic story in Rio de Janeiro or its surroundings, in some cases, relating to previous photographic works or interests.

Magnum’s photographers will lead students to find how they can improve their photography and editing skills, independently, rather than imposing their own photographic style. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with, and all efforts will be made to accommodate their choice. The reduced number of participants, 13 max per group, and the location of the workshop, will create a  intimate and inspiring working environment.

The workshop will end with a public evening projection of the participants’ works produced during the 5 days, the work of Cristina, Bieke and Michael and an exclusive Magnum Photos dinner event.

More information on how to register to the talks and dinner will be available at a later date.

Workshop Requirements

Cristina Garcia Rodera and Bieke Depoorter’s workshops will be held from April 22 to 26, 2017.
Michael Christopher Brown’s workshop will occur from April 26 to 30, 2017.

Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and will be expected to arrive with their equipment, ready to photograph. The workshop is limited to just 12 participants and photographers, which is subject to online applications. One additional space will be given as a scholarship, to a local photographer.

We recommend participants attend with at least one realistic project idea they are confident to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research be conducted before the workshop begins. This should include contact liaison, access information and even early shooting – please refer to your teacher’s specific requirements.

On the first day participants will have the opportunity to present their existing work and discuss potential project ideas. The workshop structure is self-directed and participants will be responsible for their own coordination and time management. Candidates are encouraged to be realistic about what is achievable in five days.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be recommended.

Travel & Accommodation

Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates. International visitors can travel to Brazil from most major terminals.
Please ensure you have the necessary travel documents & relevant visas in order to attend the event. Magnum Photos can provide letters of support when necessary.

Early Bird Tickets are 1100€ (applications to be received before 23rd March, 2017), and normal tickets are 1200€ (both tickets does not include travel, accommodations or on the ground expenses). All fees must be paid within 7 days of acceptance or you will forfeit your space.

Please note: Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 10 participants. Students will be given either a full refund or offered a place with an alternative photographer. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 2 weeks advance notice. Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.

  • If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, this must be confirmed in writing
  • Magnum Photos will reimburse all the registration costs except for €100 administrative fee, if the participant informs Magnum Photos of cancellation at least 3 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, Magnum Photos will charge the following:
    – 50% of the cost if cancelled between 15 and 21 days before the workshop commences
    – 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 15 days before the workshop commences
  • All workshops that are commenced but not completed through the fault of either the contractor/or participant need to be paid in full.
  • Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case a workshop is cancelled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.

Upon submitting your online application you will be transferred to Paypal where you must submit a 100€ application fee. This will be applied to your tuition fee invoice if you are accepted onto the workshop. The fee will be fully refunded, minus Paypal fees, if you are NOT accepted into the workshop. Applications without a fee will not be processed.

The first deadline for acceptance is April 2nd. Qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of merit towards their work, their personal statement and the order of their application’s receipt. Applications received after April 2nd will be reviewed, space permitting.

Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
