Magnum Caravan Brazil – Paraty & Rio de Janeiro
A new program of educational events, taking place in different locations in Brazil begins in Paraty and Rio
Magnum Caravan Brazil is a new program of educational events, taking place in different locations in Brazil over 2016.
A hybrid workshop/creative retreat and artist residency will take place in Paraty this September (17th and 18th), followed by the unique Rio de Janeiro workshop (from September 20th to 26th) with the Magnum photographer Gueorgui Pinkhassov.
Magnum Caravan Brazil
Brazil has a rich and diverse landscape offering a wealth of possibilities for photographic exploration. This program will guide students through exploring urban environments, interrogating the cultural, aesthetic, and political landscape of each location. Different Magnum photographers in each city will conduct a visually exciting and fun exploration into these hidden gems. This will be a visually creative journey, significant for each location.
Under the guidance of the Magnum instructors, students will explore photography concurrent with their exploration of these cities to fine tune their storytelling and authorship.
Notes: There is a scholarship for one student for each class. Less privileged but talented local photography students/photographers can apply here.

Gueorgui Pinkhassov‘s interest in photography began while he was still at school. After studying cinematography at the VGIK (the Moscow Institute of Cinematography), he went on to work at the Mosfilm studio and then as a set photographer. In 1978 Pinkhassov joined the Moscow Union of Graphic Arts and obtained the status of an independent artist. His work was noticed by the prominent Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, who invited Pinkhassov to the set to make a reportage about his film ‘Stalker’ (1979).
Pinkhassov moved permanently to Paris in 1985. He joined Magnum Photos in 1988. He works regulary for the international press, particularly for Geo, Actuel and the New York Times Magazine. His book, Sightwalk, explores individual details, through reflections or particular kinds of light, often approaching abstraction.
