London: Matt Stuart – Street Photography Workshop
See the streets of London through the eyes of new Magnum nominee Matt Stuart
"Buy a good pair of comfortable shoes, have a camera around your neck at all times, keep your elbows in, be patient, optimistic and don’t forget to smile"
- Matt Stuart
Magnum Photos is proud to announce our first workshop with new nominee Matt Stuart, who will teach students about his photographic practice, sharing his own experience and the principles that have guided his career. Having lived in London all of his life and photographing on its streets for the last 20 years, Matt knows the city like the back of his hand.
During this intensive weekend street photography workshop, Matt will take students out on the street and pass on his tips and tricks on capturing the extraordinary in the everyday. The group will then meet in the afternoons at the Magnum Photos London office to share feedback and discuss ways to improve technique and imagery.
This will be a classroom and shooting workshop, combining lectures, technique, critique and editing. The shooting part of the programme will start in the West End on Saturday and finish in the East End on Sunday.
This workshop caters for intermediate to experienced photographers. Students must have a good knowledge of their camera and bring 10 photos to class for review (jpegs or prints). Students will be asked to bring their own laptop and cameras along with a USB stick. Only digital work will be reviewed during the course.
About Matt Stuart
Born in 1974, Matt Stuart was raised in the leafy suburbs of Harrow, North West London. He admits to a less than distinguished school career, but was called upon aged 11 to play a trumpet solo in front of the Queen Mother. Her Majesty’s reaction is not recorded.
A little later, in 1986, Matt discovered skateboarding after watching the film “Back to the Future”. Skating occupied his every waking moment until 1994, when he looked up from the half-pipe and noticed that girls had got a lot more interesting. He also indulged in a brief, ill-advised affair with Kung Fu.
Matt’s father, keenly aware that his son would never be the next Bruce Lee, introduced him to photography, handing over books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ever since then, photography has been Matt’s overriding passion, although he’s still quite interested in skateboards and girls. (But thankfully not Kung Fu).
Tuition for the workshop is £450 with an Early Bird discount (apply before 28th of September) and £500 for later registrations. Last registration Friday 7th of October. This fee does not include flights, accommodation or meals. All on the ground expenses are the responsibility of the student. Students will be emailed a full welcome package with suggestions for lodgings.
A £40 application fee is required for each application. If accepted, this balance will be applied to the final tuition. If the student is not accepted, a refund of the application fee, minus a £5 processing charge, will be granted.
