Human 2.0: Technology Redraws the Boundaries of the Body
A panel discussion on humanity's future featuring Olivia Arthur and leading microbiologist and geneticist, Andrew Hessel, co-founder and Chairman of the Genome Project
Magnum Photos is partnering with the Boston Consulting Group to create new work examining the relationship between humanity and technology.
Since the dawn of civilization, humans have used technology to transcend the limits of the human body. From the development of the wheel to the breakthroughs of modern medicine, we have continually strived to make up for what Shakespeare termed “the thousand natural shocks/That flesh is heir to.” Today, a proliferation of new technologies—from smart prostheses and bio-hybrid robots, to nootropics and smart drugs, to CRISPR, gene drives, and synthetic biology—all promise not merely to restore physical health or mental capability but to radically enhance it.
What will humans look like when there are no limits to how they can enhance themselves with the help of science and technology? Pioneering developments have meant that bodies are able to look and function in ways that were once unthinkable. In parallel, robots are getting closer to mimicking human intelligence and physical ability.
Olivia Arthur has created a new body of work that explores the increasingly blurred line between what distinguishes humans from machines.
As part of SXSW 2020, Arthur will participate in a panel discussion with leading microbiologist and geneticist, Andrew Hessel, co-founder and Chairman of the Genome Project, as well as Dharmesh Syal, Managing Director, Partner and CTO of BCG Digital Ventures and Massimo Portincaso, Managing Director and Partner of BCG.
1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a networking reception immediately following.
