In September 2015, Magnum Photos and Spéos launched their master programme in Creative Documentary and Photojournalism.
The Creative Documentary & Photojournalism course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in documentary photography and/or photojournalism, in the Magnum tradition of visual storytelling. The course will equip students with the historical and contextual framework required to raise the critical thinking about documentary photography, as well as providing technical guidance and tutorial support.

Students will have unique access to Spéos and highly equipped photo studios as well as to Magnum photographers and its experienced staff, with elements of the course taught at the Magnum Photos office in central Paris.
“I see teaching as an opportunity to give something from what I took from others during forty years of shooting” – Patrick Zachmann
‘Rather than act as a professor who hands down the truth, Abbas tends to direct students to find out by themselves how they can improve their photography and their editing’ – Abbas
“I think it was Anatole France who said that nine-tenths of education is encouragement. I always believed this. Students are vulnerable in many ways and they need doors and windows to open, not close. I try to stand in the shoes of my students, to see what they are trying to achieve and to use my experience to open new avenues of thought and possibility” – Stuart Franklin
“What I try to focus on the most during the discussions is to emphasise the complexity of what it means to be involved in the process of making art and documentary photography, and the importance of questioning one’s own position and currency in a larger global, social, economic and political landscape” – Max Pinckers
