Later this month, a large retrospective exhibition of the late Magnum photographer and co-founder David ‘Chim’ Seymour’s iconic photographs will be on view at the Jewish Historical Museum, located in the former synagogue complex of the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Amsterdam. In 1947, along with friends and fellow photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and George Rodger, Chim founded Magnum Photos. After David Rappaport – owner of the picture agency Rap – lent him a camera, Chim went on to shoot a story about night workers, and dedicated his life to photographing political events since the early 1930’s.

Having spent three years in the US Army from 1942, Chim was no stranger to life at the forefront of conflict. His photographic works are a record of significant and often tumultuous moments in history, including the pre-war political protests in France, coverage of the Spanish Civil War, the emergence of the State of Israel and touching images taken of children in Europe affected by the aftermath of the Second World War. Chim held the post of president of Magnum Photos and remained in this position until his death in 1956.
