As part of the group exhibition A Voix Haute, the series Listen by photographer Newsha Tovakolian will be presented at La Graineterie, Houilles, France.

The collective exhibition A Voix Haute is a multifaceted reflection on the role of voice, its scope, and its cultural, social and political significance, which brings together and documents various vocal forms that address the voice as a plastic and sound material.

In Listen, Newsha Tovakolian explores the circumstances of female singers in Iran, where they have not been allowed to perform in public or produce records since the Islamic revolution of 1979. Presenting staged portraits of Iranian women simulating a public performance alonside imaginary, empty, CD album covers, the photographer sheds light upon the silencing of women singers in the country.

A self-taught photographer working in photojournalism since the age of 16, Tavakolian became a Magnum nominee in 2015, an associate in 2017, and has been a full member since the summer of 2019.
