Description

Join Olivia Arthur for a 5-day exploration of portraiture in photography as part of our Inside>>Out program.

For the first time, Olivia Arthur will lead a workshop dedicated to portraiture in its broadest sense. Over the course of five days, you will delve into a subjective approach to capturing portraits—whether it’s engaging with strangers on the street, using portraiture to tell a broader story, or experimenting in a makeshift studio.

By the end of the workshop, you will leave with greater confidence in asking strangers to pose for you. You will not only master the concepts of lighting but also understand the importance of conversation and building a connection with your subject before taking their photograph.

We will explore how to establish connections in a foreign city to find people to photograph and how portraiture can be a powerful tool to tell the larger story of a community, family, or neighborhood. Additionally, we will examine how combining text with portraits—through interviews, poetry, or diary excerpts—can add deeper meaning to the images.

This workshop offers :

  • Build confidence in approaching and photographing strangers.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of lighting techniques for portraiture.
  • Learn how to establish a meaningful connection with your subjects before photographing them.
  • Explore the use of portraiture to tell broader narratives about communities, families, or neighborhoods.
  • Experiment with combining text and portraits to add layers of meaning—through interviews, poetry, or diary excerpts.
  • Gain insights into working in a makeshift studio or adapting to various settings for portrait photography.
  • Participate in one-to-one reviews with Olivia Arthur for personalized feedback and guidance.
  • Engage in group discussions to receive diverse perspectives, learn from peers, and foster a sense of creative community.
