Are you working on a photo-documentary project and facing challenges in sequencing and editing? The Learn team, in partnership with BECA Before Creating Academy, is pleased to support you in this important outcome offering you exclusive guidance from Magnum photographer Peter van Agtmael.
Peter van Agtmael, who just published his latest photobook Look at the U.S.A: A Diary of War and Home, will guide you on your project’s approach and the next steps. Over two days, you’ll dive deeply into the art of sequencing and editing, with hands-on exercises, group portfolio reviews, and personalized feedback to help you refine your visual narrative. This workshop is designed to empower you to present your work more effectively—to industry professionals, and public audiences alike.
This immersive and intimate group setting workshop invites photographers seeking to get a better understanding of the subjective process of editing and sequencing a body of work and how this can transform the way you see and approach your projects.
Editing is a hugely important and valuable process with different stages and uses. Not to be confused with post-processing your images with programs like Lightroom or Photoshop, editing is the process of looking deeply at the photographs you are making, to interrogate them with a critical eye, to review and reject the weak images, and to find something remarkable on the contact sheet or screen.
This workshop is open to 12 participants and is suitable for photographers with a substantial body of work seeking guidance in the final stages of their projects, as well as photographers embarking on new projects and in the research stage. Each participant will have the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the editing process for long-term projects and selecting the optimal format for their presentation.
This workshop offers:
- Exclusive Mentorship from Peter van Agtmael: Participants will receive personal guidance from a renowned Magnum Photographer, providing insights based on his expertise in photo-documentary work and long-term projects.
- Support in project development: the workshop is focused on helping participants refine and progress their personal, long-term photo-documentary projects, addressing specific challenges related to sequencing and editing.
- Learning about sequencing and editing: Attendees will engage in practical exercises that teach the art of sequencing (arranging images in a meaningful order) and editing (selecting the strongest images), crucial skills for telling compelling visual stories.
- Group review sessions: The workshop includes group critiques where participants can receive constructive feedback not only from Peter van Agtmael but also from peers, creating an environment for learning and exchange.
