The image of the Deer and Bull was made during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the Sierra Madres, a time when many participants fashion elaborate masks, often depicting fantastic animals and devils, made of papier-mâché, plant fibers, and other natural materials. The magical quality of transformation embodied in these celebrations reveals a rich cultural heritage.”
