Fernando Scianna started taking photographs in the 1960s while studying literature, philosophy and art history at the University of Palermo. It was there that he also began to photograph the Sicilian people, their surroundings and their customs. Feste Religiose in Sicilia (1965) includes an essay by the Sicilian writer Leonardo Sciascia, and was the first of Scianna's many collaborations with famous writers.
