In this exhibition Martin Parr set his eyes on the working class Cité-Briand neighbourhood in Mulhouse, France. The photographs exhibited in La Filature, refer to his previous works, ‘The Last Resort’ and ‘Signs of the Times’, two remarkable projects of his career.
Invited by La Filature, Martin Parr stayed a few days in this emblematic historical city, composed of its famous ‘carrés mulhousiens’, adjoined maisonettes with small private gardens, designed by manufacturers in the nineteenth century.
During his trip, Martin Parr has met merchants, hawkers from the market place and about thirty inhabitants in their homes.
A selection of about 100 photographs can be seen in the exhibition – a photographic project which continues his initial interest in Western consumer societies.
