At least 700 migrants died this past weekend while trying to make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. In recent years, Patrick Zachmann has documented these migrations, following the plight of the many thousands who attempt to find sanctuary in Europe and exploring their relationship to the sea (mare) they had to cross and to the mother (mater) they left behind. In a testimony of his roots and to the present, this work culminated in the book <a href='http://www.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&ALID=2K1HRGWQQ66U' target='_blank'>Mare Mater</a>.
