The Claustre Affair.
In 1974, French archaeologist Françoise Claustre was kidnapped by rebel forces in Chad while exploring ancient tombs. Held for 33 months by Hissène Habré’s Maoist group, her captivity became a major diplomatic crisis. Her husband, Pierre Claustre, was also taken hostage after trying to negotiate her release.
In 1975, French photojournalist Raymond Depardon interviewed Claustre during her captivity. His images and documentaries, Tchad 2 and Tchad 3, aired on French TV and caused a public outcry.
Finally, in 1977, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi brokered a deal for their release. Years later, Depardon revisited the story in his 1990 film Captive of the Desert, inspired by Claustre’s ordeal.
