Starting in Rio de Janeiro in 2004, Depardon traveled to 12 cities, capturing images of people on the street, in shops and in other public places. He spent only a short time in each city, in order to document his first impressions in unspoiled form. The cities he chose were all in a state of upheaval and were therefore receptive for his candid gaze. Depardon loves to lose himself in foreign cities and to entrust himself to the flow of passers-by in the lively streets. His travels brought him to locales as varied as Moscow, New York, Shanghai, Berlin, Dubaï and Addis Ababa. There he took photos and made films in color - all new to him - which documented the everyday life of the people he saw. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Museum fur Fotografie, Statliche Museen zu Berlin - Kunstbibliothek. Text in English, French and German.
