After several years of Civil War between Georgian Government troops and Russian backed Abkhaz seperatitst the later manage to drive the Georgian Army out of the former ASSR Abkhazia, an area at the Black Sea coast. Remaining ethnic Georgians are made to flee, tha Abkhaz are beginning to run the place as an independent country under President Vladislav Ardzinba, but stay under a blockade. Before the War, ethnic Abkhaz constituted 17% of the population according to the last USSR census, on the 3rd place after Armenians and Georgians. - Thomas Dworzak
