FRANCE. Basse-Normandie. Calvados. - FRA.NORMANDY.CHAOS.1983.On the cliff north of Longues sur Mer, the Germans had installed a marine artillery battery able to fire over the Seine Bay.Having been partially destroyed by air raids, it was nevertheless able to open fire on Allied ships before dawn on the 6th June 1944.On the morning of the 7th June, the battery was occupied by the British, the tow storey observation posts were installed at the ege of the cliff at Longues sur Mer between Arromanches and Port en Bassin.It had to direct the operations of German marine artillery battery that had 152 guns able to cover the whole of the area of the Seine Bay between Le Havre and Cherbourg.

Calvados. - FRA.NORMANDY.POINTE DU HOC.Halfway between Omaha and Utah stands the POINTE DU HOC, dominating the sea with its vertical cliffs.It was crowned by a battery in a concrete shelter.This had to be taken by the Allies in order to fre the beaches of the menace which it threatened.The American 2nd Rangers Batallian did the job, approaching the cliff by boat with fire ladders and rafts they shot grappling irons up the cliff face,under close naval artillery cover and managed to scale to the summit,and for several days withstood the German counter attack.

Calvados. - FRA.NORMANDY.UTAH BEACH.Located at La Madeline and St.Germain de Vareville, it was taken by the 4th US Division and was the site where Gen Roosevelt landed.From this point he directed the capture of the German stronghold (bunker W.5 held by the 709th German division) and advanced towards St Marie du Mont and Pouppeville, where he joined forces with parachutists of General Taylor's command.
