The ship can launch four aircraft simultaneously using it's four catapults on the four and a half acre flight deck, and has up to 80 aircraft on board including: EA-6B Prowlers for radar jamming, the airborne radar E2-C Hawkeye, two squadrons of F14 Tomcats, two squadrons of F18 Hornets. The cruisers role in the Battle Group is to be 'Red Crown' which acts as the link ship to all the other ships in the fleet. All inputs from every radar used by NATO is fed into their computers and relayed out to all NATO units, to create a huge composite picture of the battle scene. This particular screen is showing all the 'friendly' aircraft in the air (symbolised by a dot with a semicircle above), it is two in the morning and we can see the bombing runs coming in from the North making their way to targets in Serbia and Kosovo. 1999. - Peter Marlow

Is a cruiser, one of 27 in the US Navy fleet, built at a cost of one and a half billion dollars each. It has probably the most sophisticated and advanced naval weapons system known to man. The AEGIS radar system is a computerised air defence system using SPY radar which has the power of one and a half million microwave ovens, This can track and detect virtually anything above the size of a pencil within a 200 mile radius.

It uses the Vertical Launch system, with a total of 65 missiles, which can launch both Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles, and standard surface to air missiles. Capable of speeds up to 32 knots the ship is powered by twin DC10 jet engines.

Is a cruiser, one of 27 in the US Navy fleet, built at a cost of one and a half billion dollars each. It has probably the most sophisticated and advanced naval weapons system known to man. The AEGIS radar system is a computerised air defence system using SPY radar which has the power of one and a half million microwave ovens, This can track and detect virtually anything above the size of a pencil within a 200 mile radius.

It uses the Vertical Launch system, with a total of 65 missiles, which can launch both Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles, and standard surface to air missiles. Capable of speeds up to 32 knots the ship is powered by twin DC10 jet engines.

The first ships to use the Air Cushion Landing Craft (LCAC) which is a fast moving large hovercraft capable of landing large forces of Marines and equipment to a beachhead. The ship has onboard aside from its crew a full detachment of 2200 marines ready for deployment.
For close air support the ship has large flight deck equipped with Harrier II jump jets, and a full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters.
