Zero Line
At 3:47 a.m. near the Dnipro River in Kherson, a Ukrainian BMP-2 fired into the dark, each 30mm round lighting the night. Just meters away, Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang and his fixer crouched low on the volatile zero line—where silence often signals danger. That night, a Russian suicide drone hunted them. Had it struck, there’d be no story to tell.
Since Russia’s 2022 invasion, Chien-Chi Chang has made ten self-funded trips to Ukraine’s frontlines. His latest, with the 40th Brigade, comes as the war escalates. In June 2025, Russia launched its biggest drone and missile assault yet—477 drones and 60 missiles in one day. While global focus shifts elsewhere, his documents of the war grow only more brutal.
