INDIA Drought and Famine - Chotay Lal (55) and his wife Sunder Devi (40), he has worked for the last 19 years as a 'masalchi' (dishwasher) in the famous Gymkhana Club in Delhi.His wife washes dishes twice a day for three other families to bring in more income.They have 5 children, a grandson,2 cats and 2 parrots.They live in one room plus a porch with courtyard paying no rent,in quarters on the Club grounds.He displays 'one week of food' they can afford. - Marilyn Silverstone

Nearby sit or lie the lame, half blind, these people are working on road relief programme and are paid one rupee a day for the men and 12 annas a day for the women.The anna is worth about 75 pice, 100 pice to the rupee, rice costs 12 annas a kilo, the cheapest grain 9 annas a kilo.The old people used to rice, cannot digest jowar.The last great drought in this area was in 1901. - Marilyn Silverstone
