USA. MEXICO. Border Wall. - USA. California. 2006. San Diego-Tijuana border. New concrete barrier under construction and steel doors with numerical punch codes for Border Patrol entrance and exit. This wall is currently being built approximately one hundred yards north of the original steel wall, the construction of which began in 1994 under President Clinton's Operation Gate Keeper. The original wall is built from recycled steel once used in the Gulf War for helicopter landing pads. The Border Patrol is able to survey from various vantage points. A road runs along both walls for patrol access. In the most densely populated areas the wall is equipped with sensors and spot lights. This surveillance has driven migrants to cross in mountain and desert regions where many die of exposure and dehydration or may be attacked by vigilante groups on the US side. - Larry Towell

At the Pacific Ocean, the wall that separates the US from Mexico is plastic coated steel track driven vertically into the sand where it extends into the Pacific Ocean. There are some gaps in the wall wide enough for humans to pass through. The beach is under 24 hour surveillance by parked Border Patrol vehicles, sensors and spotlights, as well as overhead helicopters. The increased surveillance has driven many of the migrants to attempt to cross through the mountains and deserts where many die of exposure and dehydration, are vulnerable to wild animals and vipers, or may be attacked by vigilante groups on the US side. At Imperial Beach on the US side of the border, the wall that separates the US from Mexico runs into the Pacific Ocean. It is made from lengths of rubber coated steel resembling railroad track and is driven into the sand. Up from the beach, the border once more becomes a salvaged solid steel wall, then chain-link fence, and then steel again. Although there are some gaps in the wall wide enough for humans to pass through, the beach is under constant surveillance by parked Border Patrol vehicles, sensors, spotlights and helicopters. Surveillance has driven migrants to cross further east through the mountains and deserts where many die of exposure and dehydration or may be attacked by vigilante groups on the US side.In this frame the spotlights are provided by a CNN television crew preparing for the advent of media personality Anderson Cooper whose report to America will focus on Mexican crime and drugs. USA. MEXICO. Border Wall. - MEXICO. Tijuana. 2006. Migrant men find used clothing at La Casa del Migrante (House of the Migrant), which shelters 180 males 18 years of age or older for up to 15 days. The faith-based home, run by a Catholic priest, was founded in Tijuana in 1987. Between then and 2004, 141,000 men have found temporary shelter within its walls. Men from Central America, South America and Mexico have run out of money as they wait to attempt an illegal border crossing. Others have already been deported back to Mexico. The migrants are given meals, healthcare, haircuts, showers, spiritual guidance and a dormitory bed. There are six other shelters for migrants run by the Scalabrini Missionaries from Guatemala to Chicago, attempting to provide basic amenities to the hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants fleeing southern poverty. - Larry Towell

USA. MEXICO. Border Wall. - USA. California. 2006. San Diego-Tijuana border. New concrete barrier under construction with steel doors and numerical punch codes for Border Patrol entrance and exit. This wall is currently being built approximately one hundred yards north of the original steel wall, the construction of which began in 1994 under President Clinton's Operation Gate Keeper. The original wall was built from recycled steel once used in the Gulf War for helicopter landing pads. The Border Patrol is able to survey from various vantage points. A road runs along both walls for patrol access. In the most densely populated areas the wall is equipped with sensors and spot lights. This surveillance has driven migrants to cross in mountain and desert regions where many die of exposure and dehydration or may be attacked by vigilante groups on the US side. - Larry Towell
