The demonstration organized on February 7th, in Paris in favor of Algeria's independence and in order to protest against the actions of the OAS (Secret Army Organisation), fighting at all costs to keep the Algeria under French rule), ended in tragedy. To escape a police attack, the crowd ran towards the Charonne metro station's stairs which were closed. Several people died from suffocation or from being crushed. - Henri Cartier-Bresson

La manifestation organisée le 7 février 1962 à Paris en faveur de l'indépendance de l'Algérie et pour protester contre les agissements de l'OAS (Organisation armée secrète), décidée à poursuivre à tout prix la lutte pour l'Algérie française, s'est terminée par une tragédie. Pour fuir une charge de police, la foule s'est précipitée dans les escaliers de la station de métro Charonne, dont les grilles d'entrée avaient été fermées. Plusieurs personnes sont mortes étouffées ou écrasées. - Henri Cartier-Bresson
