Dominic Nahr
b. 1983, Switzerland
Dominic Nahr was raised in Hong Kong where he established himself as a photojournalist. There, he worked for the South China Morning Post as a staff photographer. In 2007, while still attending university in Toronto, Nahr became a freelance photographer, being commissioned by magazines such as Newsweek, GQ and The Fader. He graduated from Ryerson University in 2008.
With an objective to show unfolding actions that must not be continued or forgotten, Nahr works with a strong and unwavering gaze that is intent on narrating a certain and unflinching narrative about civil unrest and the crimes inflicted in the pursuit of protecting physical and psychological borders.
Nahr has been honored with several prestigious awards, including The Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award. He has been selected as one of the ‘Top 30 under 30 photographers’ by PDN magazine and has been exhibited at Visa Pourl’Image in Perpignan, France. Recently, Nahr has been selected to take part in this year’s Joop Swart Masterclass in Holland and grants from the Pulizer Center and the Emergency Fund. His editorial clients include National Geographic, Time, Stern, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde 2, Internazionale, and GQ. Nahr’s fine art prints are featured in major collections.
Nahr joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in July 2010 and is represented by O’Born Contemporary Gallery in Toronto. Nahr is based out of Nairobi, Kenya.
