Distro - Voices of Protest in Senegal
Dominic Nahr
After President of Senegal Abdoulaye Wade managed to change the country's constitution so that he could run for a third term, movements like 'Y'en ai marre' (Enough is Enough) and that of Youssou N’Dour sprung up. Riots broke out throughout Dakar in response to Wade's crackdown on opposition gatherings. The 'Y'en ai marre' is comprised of famous musicians who voice their opinions through public assemblies in order to educate and promote change. Youssou N’Dour, internationally acclaimed musician who had previously attempted to run for president, but was barred from doing so by the current regime, is also now leading protests aimed at unseating Wade. After preliminary elections, a showdown between Wade and the closest presidential contender is set for the end of March.
