It is a balmy summer evening and they have biked a few miles to come to our home. The 1951 Chevy pickup behind them is still shiny and new looking although the photographer is still working on the headlights. She is included here as she has found her way into other family pictures as she used to play with my children. She is our nearest neighbour and lives two miles away. She became a good guitar player and at one time she said she wanted to become a professional photographer. Family Album. - CANADA. Lambton County, Ontario. 1992. Ann TOWELL is seen through the windshield of the car standing in front of the house. I had just installed two used cedar windows in the bedroom. They were handmade and were free. In the winter of 1995/96 we tore off the old cedar siding and replaced it with pine. I painted flowers on the new window trim. The house was built about 100 years ago by pioneer land surveyor Samuel Smith. He was working for the British Crown carving the land into townships. Local Indians knew at the time what was happening but could do nothing. On the farm there are 3 Indian village sites and a native burial ground that were covered with soybeans when we moved in. They are now in black locust trees and gardens that I planted. Naomi is in the right hand corner of the frame. She always jumps into the car when I get home.

I did not notice until I saw this print that her pants are also flowered. She's my only daughter, what can I say? I always miss her a great deal when I go away. It is on the eastern edge of the farm. From the pioneer cemetery on the small knoll in the field across from the house, one can see the remains of four farms. Fifty years ago, this part of rural Ontario was heavily populated. Sparce human landscape remains. Naomi and I often come into this house to explore. My earliest pictures were taken of my sisters in abandoned houses who were about her age in this picture. If one is not carefull you will fall through the floor which has rotten away from the rain. Moses is taking a rest after playing ball on the road. Noah is wearing the jacket his older brother outgrew but that is still too large for him. The shed that Moses leans against was for storage of farm implements and was built back when one could build anywhere, including three feet from the road from the road. In the summer of 1995 I poured a concrete floor inside of it and replaced the leaky steel roof with new salvaged steel (at half the price). Family Album. - CANADA. Lambton County, Ontario. 1991. Naomi TOWELL at the Brigden Fair. These rural farm fairs are always one of the high points of my year. The antique steam tractors in the background were used to plough Canadian farms and run machinery that needed a lot of torque and a pulley, such as thrashing machines and saw mills. Sometimes at the demonstrations I work in the mill. Some of the red oak and walnut boards in my house were sawn here from trees I brought on a wagon. The pulleys turned by steam power generated from a wood fire held in a furnace at the back of the tractor. I have two tractors Ð an Oliver 770 and a Case 400. Both of them are much newer, from the 1950s. Mine run on gasoline and diesel. ©Larry Towell/Magnum Photos - Larry Towell
