Like many other Inuit settlements, Qikiqtarjuaq is a 'dry' community, meaning alcohol is banned. Life for many of Qikiqtarjuaq's youth is a mix of boredom, violence, divided families and a troubled quest for an identity that balances the old, nomadic lifestyle values of their grandparents, and the popular culture seen on TV. Hundreds of kilometers from the nearest neighboring village, the settlement has one of the highest suicide rates in all of Canada. The youth of Qikiqtarjuaq are far removed from the more immediate lifestyle of their grandparents, who were hunters and fishermen. Today many live off the Canadian welfare system, and although influenced by the popular culture of the south, they are equally isolated from the modern Canadian life, which from here seems like a different and distant world. - Jonas Bendiksen
