<strong>Magnum Workshop Brighton</strong>

Magnum Photos is delighted to announce the Magnum Workshop Brighton, a unique photography experience held in the infamous seaside town of Brighton, United Kingdom.
As part of the Brighton Photo Biennial 2012, Magnum Photos will host an intensive, practice oriented five-day photography workshop. Three internationally acclaimed photographers, Moises Saman, Mikhael Subotzky and Alessandra Sanguinetti will lead intimate groups of twelve individuals in an intensive program of photographic development. Participants will work in a combination of shooting and presenting their work in a series of tutorials on a daily basis. Tuition will focus on participant approaches to chosen projects, including advice on technical skills, aesthetics and editing process. The workshop will provide photographers with an opportunity to develop their personal vision and the skills required to compete in a hugely competitive marketplace.
Following the 2010 Biennial curated by Martin Parr, which saw over 60,000 visitors, the 2012 edition is curated and produced by Photoworks, the UK’s leading visual arts agency for photography. <strong>The Workshop</strong>
Magnum’s development courses are aimed at photographers who wish to push their personal boundaries and challenge their visual understanding. Participants will spend time alongside their Magnum tutor attending daily reviews, group critiques, mentoring and editing sessions whilst also working on a self- directed practical project. Through this process, candidates will further develop their visual language, photographic identity, practical, technical and conceptual skills and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace.
Participants will have the opportunity to create new bodies of work, or develop existing projects within the cultural hub of Brighton and the surrounding area. The workshop will culminate in a projection of participant work at the Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton on the 4th November, as part of the official festival programme. Through the generous support of Magnum’s educational partners Blurb, workshop participants will also have the opportunity to further their editing experience through the production of 8”x10” group Blurb book.
Participants are encouraged to attend optional (but highly recommended) lectures provided by the acclaimed University of Brighton photographic department, exclusively available to Magnum workshop photographers. The presentations, delivered by professors, lecturers and working photographers, will provide further theoretical depth to the course.

<strong>Requirements</strong>
Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 12 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development.
Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to their projects prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management.
Due to the fast pace of the workshop Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required.

Upon submitting your online application you will be transferred to Google Checkout where you must submit a £40 application fee. This will be applied to your tuition fee invoice if you are accepted onto the workshop. The fee will be fully refunded, if you are NOT accepted into the workshop. Applications without a fee will not be processed.

<strong>Travel & Accommodation</strong>
Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates. International visitors are advised to fly to Gatwick Airport which is only a 30min train ride from central Brighton.
Please ensure you have the necessary travel documents & relevant visas in order to attend the event. Magnum Photos can provide letters of support where necessary.

<strong>The Photographers</strong>
<i>Moises Saman
Spanish, American. b. 1974</i>
Moises Saman was born in Lima, Peru, from a mixed Spanish and Peruvian family.
Moises interned at several small newspapers in California, and after graduating from university he moved to New York City to complete a summer internship at New York Newsday newspaper. That fall, upon completion of the internship, Moises spent a month traveling in Kosovo photographing the immediate aftermath of the last Balkan war. In 2000 Moises joined Newsday as a Staff Photographer, a position he held until 2007. During his 7 years at Newsday Moises' work focused on covering the fallout of the 9/11 attacks, spending most of his time traveling between Afghanistan, Iraq, and other Middle Eastern countries. In the fall of 2007 Moises left Newsday to become a freelance photographer represented by
Panos Pictures. During that time he become a regular contributor for The New York Times, Human Rights Watch, Newsweek, and TIME Magazine, among other international publications.
Over the years Moises' work has received awards from the World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year and the Overseas Press Club and his photographs have been shown in a several exhibitions worldwide. In 2010 Moises was invited to join Magnum Photos as a Nominee. He now lives between Cairo and New York City.
<i>Alessandra Sanguinetti
American, b. 1968</i>
Alessandra Sanguinetti was born in New York, 1968, brought up in Argentina from 1970 until 2003, and is currently based in New York.
She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship and a Hasselblad Foundation grant. Her photographs are included in public and private collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her book, “On the Sixth Day”, was published by Nazraeli Press in January 2006.
She has photographed for the The New York Times Magazine, LIFE, Newsweek, and New York Magazine.
<i>Mikhael Subotzky
South African, b. 1981</i>
Mikhael Subotzky was born in 1981 in Cape Town, South Africa, and is currently based in Johannesburg.
Subotzky’s photographic work combines the directness of the social documentary mode with a questioning of the nature of the photographic medium itself. He is concerned with the structures of narrative and representation, as well as the relationship between social storytelling and the formal poetics of image making. Over the past eight years, his work has focused on the inside and outside of South Africa’s notorious prisons, the small town of Beaufort West, and Ponte City, a single iconic building in Johannesburg
Subotzky’s work has been exhibited widely in major galleries and museums, and his prints are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the South African National Gallery, Cape Town, and the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Recent awards and grants include the 2011 Discovery Award at Rencontres de la Photographie Arles, the 2009 Oskar Barnack Award, the 2008 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant, and the 2007 KLM Paul Huf Award.
