Supported by the Hong Kong International Photo Festival Flare 2015 and for the first time in Hong Kong, Magnum Photos is thrilled to announce an exciting new photographic development opportunity for regional and international photographers in Asia.

Held at the Jockey Club Cultural Art Center (JCCAC) from October 8th to 12th, 2015, the Magnum Workshop in Hong Kong will be directed by the three renowned Magnum photographers Antoine D’Agata, Thomas Dworzak and Richard Kalvar.

During five extraordinary days, they will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst and from their peers, to develop each own visual language.

Participants will work with their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop projection. The projection will take place at JCCAC.

In addition to the workshop, Antoine d’Agata, Thomas Dworzak and Richard Kalvar will give a public talk in the course of the festival program on October 10th – more details to come.

Alongside the latest works by multiple photography groups which cover a variety of buzz topics, there are also seminars that draw almost a hundred attendees, a series of workshops, and the annual Photo Equipment Flea Market. Candidates are actively encouraged to participate in the diverse schedule of the festival events.
In addition to the educative program, Magnum Photos will present one exhibition, SELFIE Therefore I am, which includes works by : Bruce Gilden, Elliott Erwitt, Paolo Pellegrin, Philippe Halsman, Martin Parr and Steve McCurry alongside a unique Magnum selfie stand to become an iconic Magnum picture’s character.

<b>Conditions</b>

Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 13 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development.

Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to what they wish to shoot prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration ; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required and where possible. Please specific in your application your preferred media. Please note – all workshops will be conducted in English.

<b>Tuition fees</b>

HK$ 8500 / £700 (does not include travel, accommodations or on-the-ground expenses). All fees must be paid within 7 days of acceptance or you will forfeit your space. This does not include photo developing, post-production, travel, accommodations or meals.
Refund policies will be emailed with acceptance letter.

- If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, it must be confirmed in writing:
. Magnum Photos will reimburse all the registration costs except for €100 administrative fee, if the participant informs Magnum Photos of cancellation at least 3 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, Magnum Photos will charge the following:
. 50% of the cost if cancelled between 6 and 20 days before the workshop commences.
. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 5 days before the workshop commences.
. All workshops that are commenced but not completed through the fault of either the contractor/or participant need to be paid in full.
- Magnum Photos is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case a workshop is cancelled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.

<b>Travel & Accommodation</b>

Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation ; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates.

Please ensure you have the necessary travel documents & relevant visas in order to attend the event. Magnum Photos can provide letters of support where necessary.

Upon submitting your online application you will be transferred to Paypal where you must submit a HK$ 860 application fee. This will be applied to your tuition fee invoice if you are accepted onto the workshop. The fee will be fully refunded, minus Paypal fees, if you are NOT accepted into the workshop. Applications without a fee will not be processed.

The deadline for acceptance is October 4th, and qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of the merit of their work and their personal statement, and the order of their application's receipt.
All applications received after September 20th will be reviewed, space permitting.

Successful applicants will be informed via email by September 22nd. Full payment should be received by September 26th to fully confirm your place.

Please note: Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 8 participants. Students will be given either a full refund or offered a place with an alternative photographer. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 10 days advance notice.

This workshop revolves around photography as a means for asserting a personal perception of the world. Looking beyond the purely documentary, images making up a diary or inventory allow their inventor to cut free from the constraints underlying the transcription of objective reality.

Antoine d’Agata's concern is to pare down the photographic act to the need to recount ordinary or extreme experiences. Each participant will be asked to examine the ultimate goal of his approach, to play an active part in his own images, and to work on the texture of reality.

Since images, like words, only take on meaning when brought together, the workshop will focus on finding the most relevant form for each individual stance.

Working with Antoine d’Agata, participants must be ready to photograph intensively throughout the workshop and to extend the limits of their approach. They will have to confront their obsessions and contradictions as they shape a series of images conveying in real or fictional terms their private relationship with the world.

Reportage and Paraphernalia
Since I started out as a photographer I think and hope I have always been rather straight forward without excessively trying to have my own style. Giving the content, the story, the event the first place. Something I still try to adhere to.

But then, there have always been these paraphernalia, little trouvailles, elements that made the difference. The Taliban. The subtitles in M*A*S*H*, the newspapers in 56 minutes etc.
What I would like to do in the workshop is explore the possibilities to combine classic reportage storytelling with other visual elements.

We will be working on the photographer's personal stories and find new ones in Hong Kong and try to explore different and new ways in story telling.

<b>Street Photography</b>
By analyzing the pictures that participants take during the workshop, we’ll try to help each person get closer to his or her instincts, feelings and intentions, and become more sensitive and reactive to the world outside.

We will also examine how formal considerations like composition, framing, focus and depth of field enhance or limit the effect of a photograph on other people.
