On this day in 1989, a student-led protest in China's Tiananmen Square was forcibly suppressed by the country's military. The number of resulting causalities has always been a point of contention, with some reports claiming hundreds of deaths and others claiming thousands.

Several of our photographers were on the scene that day, and some of the images born out of the protest are among the most iconic in photographic history.
