THE COLLECTED WORKS OF LARRY TOWELL
WITH MIKE STEVENS

Photographer, poet and folk musician Larry Towell will tour his Collected Works performance to St Clair Michigan, The Imperial Theatre in Sarnia, King’s College in London, The Ransom Center in Austin, and World Press Photo in Amsterdam. To a projection of stills and video, Towell performs original songs and poems with field recordings playing the musical saw, guitar and shrudi box. This is a show for anyone interested in photography, multi-media, and the art of live story telling. He will be accompanied by Grand Ole Opry member and harmonica virtuoso, Mike Stevens.

Over the years, Larry has worked as a freelance Magnum photographer in areas of conflict and social unrest. His work has resulted in thirteen books, hundreds of journal publications, and exhibitions around the world. He has documented war and the civilian victims of war in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Palestine, Lebanon, Vietnam and Afghanistan, as well as the anti-globalization movements in the streets of North America and the affects of Hurricane Katrina on the US southern coast. He has also documented the disenfranchisement of rural populations due to the liberalization of international trade barriers, including the Mennonite migrant workers of Mexico, and his own family in rural Ontario. His current work-in-progess involves the indigenous Idle No More movement in Canada.

Larry’s long term projects have won many international awards, including World Press Picture Of The Year, POY, the Hasselblad, Albert Eisenstadt, the Henri Cartier-Bresson award, and the Prix Nadar, among others. Larry is also a story teller, poet, and musician. His “Collected Works” is a multi-media live concert celebrating photography and the art of story telling by incorporating slides and video with original songs, poetry, and field recordings. Along with playing the guitar, bones, and musical saw, he is accompanied by Canada’s harmonica virtuoso and recipient of many musical awards, Mike Stevens.

Mr. Stevens has played on the stage of the Grande Ole Opry more than 300 times, toured the world extensively, and is both composer and performer on his nine compact disc recordings. He has won numberous accolades, including Innovator of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Entertainer of the Year at the Canadian Bluegrass Awards, and an Honor Roll at the Central Canadian Blue Grass Awards. Mike is also founder of ArtsCan Circle which sends teams of musicians and artists to remote Canadian Indigenous communities linking creative artists with Indigenous youth at risk. He is a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

This is a unique live performance that celebrates photography, music and story telling in a show that addresses social conscience, as well as issues of identity and home.
