Magnum Photos is delighted to announce its second international workshop in Tokyo in collaboration with The Nippon Photography Institute. The workshop will be led by Magnum photographers Bruce Gilden, Jacob Aue Sobol and Gueorgui Pinkhassov.

This is a unique opportunity to produce some new work in the amazing city that is Tokyo, amongst world-class tutors, and, if you are lucky, you could also enjoy the famous cherry blossoms! Each of these tutors have produced a book in Tokyo at points of their career, (“Go” by Bruce Gilden in 2000, “I, Tokyo” by Jacob Aue Sobol in 2009, and “Sightwalk” by Gueorgui Pinkhassov in 1999.) and so, they are familiar with the methodology of producing work in the city.

Nippon Photography Institute (NPI) has more than 40 years of history, and has been producing influential members of the Japanese photographic world. This has been realised because NPI's fantastic lecturers, educational programming and offerings of high-quality equipment. (<a href='http://npi.ac.jp/en/' target='_blank'>http://npi.ac.jp/en/</a>)

The workshop is aimed at photographers with a good understanding of photographic practice, who are interested in narrative and storytelling, and looking to take the next step in their development. Each applicant will be able to choose the photographer they would like to work with, and all efforts will be made to accommodate their choice.

During these 5 days, each Magnum photographer will lead their groups through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and the opportunity to learn amongst and from their peers. Participants will work will their lead tutors to create an edit to be shown in the culminating workshop projection. The projection will take place at The Nippon Photography Institute.

As part of a special partnership with The British Journal of Photography, Magnum tutors and the BJP editors will decide of one workshop participant from each group to enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview. The online article will also be feature on Magnum's Education web pages.

The deadline for application is Monday 2nd February 2015.

This workshop is not about learning new technical skills, but rather improving each student's own unique photographic vision. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment, ready to work, and with a sufficient fluency in the English language, as this workshop will be taught in English. Each tutor will have a group of up to 13 students maximum.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop, Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. We also recommend participants to arrive with one realistic project idea they wish to develop during the workshop, and that preliminary research be conducted before the workshop begins.
