Crisis in Ukraine

May 15, 2014
by Jerome Sessini
In early May Jerome Sessini returned to Ukraine to document the ongoing crisis. He traveled around the eastern, Russian-influenced part of the country where armed separatists have clashed with Ukrainian authorities and called for a vote for separation, a move condemned by the government. On May 11th Sessini photographed an incident in which 12 armed men described as members of the Ukrainian national guard opened fire on voters outside Krasnoarmeisk town hall. A group of unarmed civilians were protesting because the gunmen forbade them from entering City Hall to participate in the referendum vote.
