La Rinconada: Gold Mining in the Peruvian Andes

Earlier this year Moises Saman traveled to La Rinconada, Peru, to photograph unsafe conditions at its gold mines for The New Yorker. The Peruvian government is attempting to regulate mining standards but in the mean time operations such as those at La Rinconada have been left alone resulting in environmental contamination and dangerous working conditions. Ambitious individuals flock to the area to try their luck at extracting gold, despite the fact that laborers aren't protected by standards that are typically enforced at large mining operations.
