People & Places

London’s South Bank has come to be recognised as the cultural hub of the city, an internationally recognised creative district with national arts institutions lining the river and Borough Market playing host to artisan food producers from across the country.

Less well known is the large network of individual artists, designers and makers that live and work in the area. Their collective output, eclectic and ambitious, is exhibited on the world stage and imbues the South Bank with a palpable sense of creativity, experimentation and tradition, creating a sense of place like no other in London.

'People & Places' uncovers the creative minds of these individuals, who live and work in the area and contribute to what makes the South Bank’s district so unique. This site-specific project has been commissioned by CIT and South Bank Tower, and conceived and curated by Futurecity. The partners of this significant project believe that culture brings authenticity to new places, providing identity, ownership and value, which supports both established and new members of the community; residents, visitors and businesses alike.

This exhibition features the photography of internationally renowned photographer Steve McCurry. McCurry is one of the world’s most celebrated and iconic contemporary photographers, best known for portraits such as ‘Afghan Girl’ but with a portfolio spanning conflicts, vanishing cultures and ancient traditions. McCurry's inimitable visual style was able to unearth and reveal the true character of the South Bank.

This beautiful project is a celebration of the people that make the South Bank an exceptional place; it should also be considered as an alternative view of the area and positively encourages our curiosity.
