The City of Six Towns

December 8, 2014
by Mark Power
In the summer of 2014 internationally renowned and critically acclaimed British photographer Mark Power was invited to make a visual study of Stoke on Trent. What are the stories, landscapes, people and places that he found?

Like visual stories or postcards from the city the new work, made up of community and urban landscapes and portraits, illustrates the people and places of Stoke-on-Trent. The work is the photographer’s own response to the city of six towns.

The 50 new works are to be exhibited outdoors in Albion Square, the large new public square in the city centre. It will provide a new opportunity for audiences to engage with the highest quality contemporary photography in a direct way, not in an institution or behind closed doors but in the public realm. The exhibition is accompanied by a talks programme.
Photographer, Mark Power, said: “Stoke-on-Trent is built upon layers of history. Behind every new build is a sign of the past, whilst in front of every ruin, ancient or modern, there’s evidence of potential change. Stoke is constantly evolving, a place in constant flux, driven forwards by the vitality of its people. Photography is good at revealing this. A picture made yesterday might be impossible to recreate today, as the world moves on.

The City of Six Towns opens on 19th November 2014 in Albion Square, Stoke-on-Trent. It is a free exhibition and will run until 20th February 2015.
