US-Cuba Relations

On December 17th, the Cuban and United States governments announced that full diplomatic relations between the two countries will be restored. The story of how reconciliation was eventually reached is becoming clearer in the wake of the news, but what's already clear is the historic nature of the action, its deep political and diplomatic importance.

The 1959 Cuban Revolution came just over a decade after the founding of the Magnum Photos cooperative. From Burt Glinn's coverage of the revolution, to René Burri's 1963 trip that yielded iconic portraits of Castro and Guevara, to Alex Webb and David Alan Harvey's bodies of work created in the the more recent past, our photographer members have been drawn to the island nation ever since.
