Gay Synagogue in New York

January 14, 2016
by A. Abbas
"The stone the builder rejected has become the conversation” is the motto of the Congregation Beit Shimshat Torah, a New York city synagogue which caters for gays, lesbians and transgenders. Straight people are also welcome.
Founded in 1973, the CBST which has over 1,100 members is “passionate, provocative, and deeply Jewish. It champions a Judaism that rejoices in diversity, denounces social injustice wherever it exists, and strives for human rights for all people.”
Its senior rabbi is a woman. Sharon Kleinbaum is often attacked by orthodox Jews since Jewish sacred texts do not condone homosexuality.
