Hinduism is a religion of rituals and nowhere are they more spectacular that in South India. A devotee goes into trance and has his jaw pierced with a spear to dance, in a temple, in honour of resident gods; a woman walks in the market, a metal trident thru her tongue, to beg for alms. No one finds this scene strange.
