When framed by a photographic lens, what do the streets of a city say about its people and their relationship to the built environment? About its political and social concerns? About its culture? Two renowned New York City-based street photographers—Alex Webb, of Magnum Photos, and Rebecca Norris Webb—will lead a special workshop exploring the genre and the opportunities and challenges of photographing on the streets of New York. Designed for amateurs and professionals alike, this program will include presentations by the Webbs about the tradition of street photography, their critiques of a street photography assignment to be completed by participants prior to the workshop, and a gallery tour of Museum exhibitions London Street Photography and City Scenes by curator Sean Corcoran, and Lunch included; reception with the artists to follow. Co-sponsored by Aperture.

BIOS:

Alex Webb is best known for his vibrant and complex color street photography work from around the world. He has published nine books, including most recently, The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs (Aperture, 2011). His photographs have been exhibited widely, and his work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum, among others. Alex became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has appeared in National Geographic, the New York Times Magazine, Geo, and other publications. He has received numerous awards and grants including a Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 1998 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007. For the past 15 years, Alex has taught photography workshops for museums, universities and galleries around the world with his wife and creative partner, Rebecca Norris Webb.

Originally a poet, Rebecca Norris Webb has published three photography books that explore the complicated relationship between people and the natural world: The Glass Between Us, Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (with Alex Webb) and her book, My Dakota (Radius, 2012) which interweaves her writing and photographs from her home state of South Dakota. She has worked for Time, Le Monde Magazine and other publications. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Ricco/Maresca Gallery, NY, and the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY. My Dakota will be shown at the Robert Klein Gallery, Boston, (October 2012) and, in 2013, the Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York, and the North Dakota Museum of Art.
